Don’t Leave the Path!

“They heard his voice come faintly: “Good-bye! Be good, take care of yourselves–and DON’T LEAVE THE PATH!” — Gandalf to Thorin and Company in The Hobbit, by J.R. Tolkien.

Peach says:

In October of 1983, I discovered two wonderful things, that were meant for the rest of my life! J.R.Tolkien, beginning with The Hobbit, (thanks to my Mama) and Old Fashioned Pumpkin Cookies! I found the recipe in our local newspaper that month, when I first began The Hobbit! I learned to make the cookies while reading the book. The two are intertwined in my mind along with the fall season. The memories of that fall are good! Both of these would be shared and dearly loved, year after year, with my Batman and our sons!

We both read the books every year. We always get something new from them. Last year, something stayed with me. It just has not gone away. It seemed so very much analogous to life, and most especially life in Christ.

In the book, there’s a point in the characters’ journey, that takes them, (Thorin and Company) necessarily through a very daunting, disagreeable, sort of mysterious and fraught with many unknowns, path through a very dark wood.

No question about it, what they needed was on the other side. There really were no better or more safe alternatives. It must be done. Further, their safety blanket (as I think of him, in this instance) Gandalf, has to part company with them at the entrance to the forest, as his mission is taking him on elsewhere for a time. They hope to rejoin in the future, if all goes well, which is by no means altogether certain.

The dwarves and Bilbo are warned by two strong figures, authority figures I’d say, that for NO reason should they stray from the path. That the path, though taking them right through a dark, dangerous and mysterious forest, filled with disagreeable things, the path would lead them THROUGH and OUT, if, they can just stay on course.

They are warned by Gandalf, (after quite an impressive warning by Beor), “Don’t stray off track!–If you do, it is a thousand to one you will never find it again and never get out of Mirkwood, and then I don’t suppose I, or anyone else, will ever see you again.” — Gandalf just before saying his good-byes to Thorin and Company outside Mirkwood Forest, The Hobbit, by J.R. Tolkien.

I find this so similar to life. Our actual journey through a fallen world. Where, though we do have the Word, The Holy Spirit, and even Jesus…on the INSIDE (which is far more than Bilbo and Thorin and Company had), there is no visible presence of Jesus every day as we trudge through our own personal Mirkwood.

We would love to have Him where we can SEE Him, side by side as we make our way through the dark and wild path through the trying world, heading to our Promised Land, One Fine Day.

The path in their Mirkwood has a darkly flowing stream. Filled with enchanted water that is said to cause them to lose their senses. So, in other words, tempting, but forbidden, and potentially deadly. Surrounding them on both sides are creatures that are darkly oppressive and unknown to them, initially. Gandalf would surely be greatly missed.

In our lives, we have all we need to stay the course, yet even still, our human frailties make us wobbly on the course! The dangers at times, encroach on our journey, and seemingly, they know just the right times to try to trip us up.

Regardless of the darkness of the world, or our personal Mirkwood, we have advantages that Bilbo did not. The Word is powerful and living, and stronger than any two-edged sword! And we have it! We have it in spades! Greater is He that is IN us, than he that is in this fallen world!

In Ephesians 6, we are reminded to ‘Put on the WHOLE ARMOR of God…’, going on to name many pertinent pieces of armor, for we traveling pilgrims of Christ.

Two in particular weigh strongly on the way through our Mirkwood!–The Shield of Faith, by which we are able to EXTINGUISH ALL THE FIERY DARTS of the enemy, AND the Sword of the Spirit, which is the WORD of God!

Psalm 119:105 states ‘Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.’ He IS our way through our Mirkwood seasons!

The best thing about our times of darkness and trial? We are never truly alone. We are never unequipped. We do not camp in Mirkwood. We travel THROUGH Mirkwood. We are promised that He always causes us to triumph. Hold on!

Yes, there are dangers. If we get off course of what we know is true and good, we risk falling in the dark waters of forgetfulness and losing our way altogether!

But, we have our Shepherd, who is much more worthy than even awesome Gandalf! Gandalf would be the first to admit it!

Our Shepherd will leave the 99, so to speak, in order to go find the one lost sheep, and bring him back to the fold and on the path! With rejoicing!

We have the inner compass, GPS guidance system, of the Holy Spirit, to bring to remembrance the Word of God, to caution, to illuminate, to encourage and comfort us. The Bible calls the Holy Spirit, the ‘earnest‘ and also the ‘seal‘ of our salvation. The earnest being like the deposit you pay to hold something until it’s redeemed (when Jesus comes for us) and the seal being a preservation device keeping us intact until final delivery! So powerful!

We have the tools. We have His Promise. We have His Presence. Mirkwood is not for keeps! It’s temporary, we are only passing through.

Proverbs 4 has a wealth of verses that speak to the necessity to stay focused on the path ahead, but, the BEST part is the conclusion of the thoughts, with this promise: “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” — Proverbs 4:18! That’s us! You and me! If you are in Christ, you have all that you need, and full assurance of getting to your Promised Land, He won’t fail you!

As I close, I want to share a few verses from Proverbs 4 to think about this, and urge you to read The Hobbit! It’s a good time to read, Y’all!!

“I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When you goest, your steps shall not be straightened; and when you runnest, thou shall not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” — Proverbs 4:11-15

Thank you for sharing this with me! Hit us up in the comments! Batman and I really enjoy connecting with you!!

God bless you and keep you!

Sunrise

Batman says:

Do you get to sometimes see the sunrise God creates for us? I’m not talking about a glance and slide on the sunglasses as your driving, but really see it?

I am blessed that on some days, not all but quite a few, I get to really see and enjoy the sunrise. Some are gray and dreary, some foggy, some just bright and clear, but some, oh those special few, they are spectacular examples of the Masters ability to paint beautiful pictures. All of these are special and I do my best to capture them on camera and send my Peach one with a good morning wish.

God didn’t make them for me to hoard, he made them to be seen and shared by all his creations, and I think Peach likes to see them. My life revolves around making Peach happy and letting her know I love her all the time whether together or apart, and the sunrise pictures helps me express that.

Anyways…. taking the time to enjoy the sunrise, be it alone or with someone, should be something you all try and do once in awhile. Slow down, watch it slowly unfold revealing the brilliant colors. Thinking about how God reveals things to us in ways we wouldn’t expect, and if not looking & listening we simply miss them. Shame to, because they are glorious revelations even if it’s just a simple sunrise. I ponder things important only to me while watching the sunrises I have, and plan to ponder a great many more with Peach along the way. Some days I cannot send Peach a sunrise picture, but everyday I want to. If I could I would share them with everyone, everyday I took them, but I’m not that ingenious, so for now Peach gets them when I take them, and the rest go to our website:

PeachandBatman.smugmug.com

Y’all pop in and look at a sunrise with us, I’ll keep putting them up as I can, God creates them, I do my best to capture a bit of them to share with you all.

Yes Peach I have sunscreen on and my sleeves and my hat and my mask……it’s a wonder I can see anything at all.

He’s Got You! Hold on!

00200BC6-64CA-49B6-A0DD-2EE4330D0661.jpeg

Peach here. Hang on!! Help is on the way! Where does your help come from? The Lord! The Lord Mighty and Powerful! And faithful to save! Someone needs this! When I read Isaiah 41:10 twice last night, in different places, it just really spoke to me. He WILL strengthen you! He WILL uphold you! And He WILL get you through!

80CC5ACD-0A46-48EA-A8B9-BC1C9D012563.jpeg

And those that come against you, the enemy of your soul and the actual in person oppression, will end up ineffective, rolling right off of you!

821A0D7C-DC9F-4805-821F-3E7F37221520.jpeg When He tells us “My People Are Destroyed For Lack of Knowledge” – Hosea 4:6, He’s not playing. There are many who believe in Christ, there are fewer who are diligent to spend time getting to know Him.

0ED933EE-D699-445C-B121-E106E35953EE.jpeg

When we KNOW Him, we KNOW He is FOR us! When He KNOW Him, we know He’s NOT against US, but He IS against our enemies! When we KNOW Him, we know He’s making us strong, He’s filling in our weak and our empty spots, making them our new best parts ever!! When we KNOW Him, we know He’s doing us good and not evil!! That our end is even far better than our beginning, that He will cause ALL things to work together for our GOOD.

497D58DE-37D4-4E8D-BE08-0FC596D0B68DBecause we love Him and are called according to His good purpose! ‘Don’t rejoice over me my enemy! Though I have fallen I WILL arise! When I sit in darkness (because at some point we all do) THE LORD will be my LIGHT’!! #HesGotYou #AndHesGotMe!! #Isaiah41:10 #Hosea4:6 #Micah7:8

Your Face, Lord, Will I Seek

FCFB5343-4B9B-4824-A19E-C37B7F8AA98FPeach says: I woke up with this scripture on my mind. I had to look up which psalm it was. Psalm 27! It has been popping up for me quite frequently the last few months!

There’s just something about our Jesus! Our Father God! The more we contemplate Him, through His Word, prayer, worship, praise, reverential awe, all these things, we are changed. Transformed. The Word tells us we change from ‘glory to glory’! Loving Him, enjoying Him is GOOD for us, Y’all!!

”O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.“ – Psalm 96:9

The Battle with Perfect

Peach says: I struggle with all or nothing thinking. If I can’t get it juuuuussstt right, at this moment, then I trick myself into wait for a better moment in time. 🤦‍♀️ I often think I have whooped it, then look around and take inventory and realize it’s still an issue!! 🤷‍♀️

We live in a fallen, imperfect world, we are born fallen and imperfect people! There’s not going to be a ‘perfect’ circumstance 98% of the time. That does not excuse us from action! There’s not going to be a perfect time 98% of the time, yet we are obligated, have purpose and responsibility to act and do the best we can!

I am most effective in God’s purpose for me, when I just hit the ground in prayer and action, trusting Him to be my grace, my favor, my wisdom, provision and timing! When I think about it from what the Lord shares with us in His Word, I would rather trade perfection, for momentum!!

20 So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘WELL DONE, GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. ENTER INTO THE JOY OF YOUR LORD.’

24 Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I WAS AFRAID, AND WENT AND HID your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” – Matthew 25:20-30

I don’t want to reach my finish line with the regrets that I wish I had done more with my time, my opportunities, the grace He gives me every day.

I also want to be focused, as an important part of this! I feel like as in a dramatic action movie moment, where the hero urgently tells the heroine “Look at me”, in other words don’t look down, don’t look around, whatever you do, don’t look behind you! Look at Jesus! How? Pick a verse and chew on it, pray, practice gratitude throughout your day!! This gives you a focus that will cause you to ‘seek first’ His kingdom, and His righteousness. When we are measuring our words and actions against that standard, we will make our best choices! And even when we flub it up, He is EVEN MORE there with His grace to choose forward and upward momentum!

Don’t be paralyzed by the desire of perfect into inaction and frozen thinking. Let His GRACE propel you into forward MOMENTUM!!

Bluffing

Peach says: last week Batman and I were doing our thing of sitting in our lawn chairs and enjoying the evening light and summer sounds. We had certain birds coming ’round that were so fun to watch!

In watching the birds, Batman told me about mockingbirds and how they will fluff up their wings to make a shadow on the ground to scare up critters. It reminded me of a verse I had heard the previous day, with regards to how the enemy of our souls will work to put us off our game. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8.

A Bible teacher that has been a great blessing to me is Joseph Prince, and he will often remind us that the devil may sound like a lion…but Jesus has made him toothless!! It is good to remember to be strong in the Lord and to be CONFIDENT in Him as well! He has indeed crushed the enemy! “13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” – Colossians 2:13-15.

And while the enemy of our souls seeks to whisper condemnation in our ears, oh so subtly, and then when that doesn’t work, will roar fearful thoughts in the middle of the night or on the job, in traffic, or just about anytime, and then! Then the cares of life can come rushing in, squeezing our peace out. Crowding out our thoughts of gratitude and praise, suffocating our logic, our wisdom and even our joy.

I would say one of our enemy’s primary mantras would be “Distract, Divide, Destroy”. Tonight we are considering his efforts to distract, to BLUFF, if you will.

It brings to mind a trite saying, but, trite sayings are often a ‘thing’ because there’s so much truth there, “FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real”. On several occasions I have talked with my friends in the faith, about how most things we dread NEVER happen, and nothing we dread is ever as bad or often, very often, not even bad at all. We waste essential time and emotional energy torturing ourselves for no reason. Not to say bad things don’t happen in this life. On the contrary, they will, and He will bring us all the way through, and better than we went in. In the meantime, as good soldiers in faith, in this thing called life and the here and now, we are to remember He is not the author of confusion, and also — For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7. In Him we live an move and have our being, He is never far from us, what have we to fear?

Trust me, I have these talks with myself often! It’s just recently He has been highlighting certain verses for me to point out that we unnecessarily fall for the bluff at times, and as Ephesians 5 reminds us, we are to ‘redeem the times, for the days are evil‘. I like to think of that as doing double time, making the most of our opportunities, and not falling for the toothless bluffer, or the cares of this world! Instead, I want to run this race of faith and life, side by side with my Batman!! –> “…And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.” –– Hebrews 12:1b-4.

How about it? Wanna come?

MORE

Peach says: “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” – John 10:10

While ‘godliness with contentment is great gain’. 1 Timothy 6:6, it is ALSO something He desires, greatly desires, you to know, that is — He is your GOOD Father, when you are in relationship, in right standing with Him, through your reliance on the perfect sacrifice of Christ Jesus on your behalf. He desires not only to work out good things for you, in you and through you, but He has goodness in store for you and WANTS you to get to know Him in these ways.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.“- Jeremiah 29:11.

“I will give you the treasures of darkness

And hidden riches of secret places,

That you may know that I, the Lord,

Who call you by your name,

Am the God of Israel.” – Isaiah 45:3 (this literally came across the TV as I was typing out this message, as the preacher was explaining ‘He is ALWAYS the God of the double portion, of more than enough’!! This coming on after the end of an entirely different message I had just watched).

Oh, how great is Your goodness,

Which You have laid up for those who fear You,

Which You have prepared for those who trust in You…!” – Psalm 31:19 (a FAVORITE of mine!)

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a REWARDER of those who diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;

Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” – Psalm 34:8

In 2001 the Lord impressed on my heart “Trust me to do you good”. Since then I have learned of His goodness to us, in us, and that He lets us be part of. About 4 or 5 years ago, He impressed on me to make my effort to help people know of His goodness. “Oh taste and see that the Lord is GOOD;”

Today I could tell you many things, many ways He has proven Himself true and faithful over and over. But, you likely have your own stories, your own experiences! I simply want to shine a spotlight on Him, on His goodness. He desires to express that goodness, that love, that rich grace, mercy, purpose and plan for you. This world we live in is designed to distract us, hopes to overwhelm us, that we may lose heart, forget, lose our upward focus! All runners must keep focused upward and forward! All mountain climbers must focus upward and forward. JESUS IS OUR UPWARD! OUR FORWARD!

I hope you feel exhilarated and encouraged. Taste and SEE! The Lord, He IS good!!

Have a Little Talk With Jesus

“Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray” – Psalm 5:2.

Peach here, Y’all! 2018. 2018 is some kind of amazing year already. So much happening, developing, growing, moving, changing, advancing! And through it all I need the wisdom of the Lord. I need my Jesus. I need to talk to Him and I need to hear from Him. I need to carry my cares to Him, ask for His strength, favor and intervention and provision! I give Him my troubles, and my gratitude, my loved ones, my friends, our country, and He gives me comfort, wisdom, joy, strength and answers!! He doesn’t need fancy words. Or some form in legalese in triplicate. Just respectful, authenticity. Based in faith in the goodness of His character and love for you. I use His Word to reframe my thinking and help me know Him bettter, and that fuels my prayer. Inspires me. Erases some of the world and it’s thinking out of me.

As I mentioned above 2018 is moving fast, and I thought at the end of last week that I rely so much on the Lord, and He is so MORE than faithful, in abundance even, is He faithful. And it made me sad to think there are those who do not know to turn to Him, do not choose to take their cares to Him. How do people make it through life without that grace, that mercy, that comfort and wisdom?

How about you? Well, as for me,  it’s time again for me to have a little talk with Jesus! I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

E7A607BB-6B29-4014-A425-26ED8E54BD1ASays Peach: Nope! That’s not Common Core!! It’s the beautiful mystery of the mathematic principal of marriage!! One of the reasons we are doing this blog, is we have been extremely blessed to enjoy a whole lot of love, life and years together. Wouldn’t have been possible without Jesus. Plain and simple and no apologies for saying so.  And in a world where marriage is becoming increasingly rare and increasingly put off until later, we hope to occasionally throw out some insight on the benefits of sticking together, being forgiving, being kind to each other, having each other’s backs, being creative at loving and serving one another, being each other’s advocate, cheer leader, comic support! Marriage will never not be a sacred gift from God, to help us and equip us to to do this thing called life!! “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9
